Bank of Japan Gov. Masaaki Shirakawa said on Saturday policy makers are closely watching the impact of looser monetary policy on crude-oil prices.

Along with the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan is taking unconventional steps to boost the economy. For examples, it boosted asset purchases by 10 trillion yen on Feb. 14, and it pledged to keep ultraeasy policy until a 1 percent inflation goal is in sight.

But Shirakawa said he did not see monetary easing as a big factor and that the recent spike was more likely due to geopolitical tensions, meaning Brent oil's recent gains have been fueled mainly by worries over Iranian supply.

A very good writer can become a very good speaker or a very good speaker can become a very good writer. This is because the skills involved are methods of communication and our language. I hope you will understand this and think about it on a philosophical basis because I guarantee you it will either improve your writing or your speaking, or both at the same time.

If a later discussion with the offending grandparent is warranted, she says it should be initiated by the child of that grandparent ? so Grandpa?s son, not daughter-in-law. And it could go like this:

??Dad, I know how much you love Johnny and care about him learning right from wrong,?? Walfish suggests. ??But you know every one of us gets our chance to be a parent and I don?t want to miss out on my chance to do what you got to do with me. Now it?s my turn.?

?If your father challenges you and doesn?t accept your reasonable boundary, you repeat the message: ?I?m not comfortable with you intervening that way,?? Walfish says. ?Anytime someone won?t respond respectfully to your comfort level, something is off. If your father says, ?Yes, but. Yes, but. Yes, but ? that?s the marker of a narcissistic trait. It shows you that his needs come before your comfort level.?

For Writers: Blogging - what's the big deal? | Gather

The Beginning

I'd just finished my sixth book in May of 2005, when I was approached by Bob Burdick to create a piece for his book-lovers' website. "Just tell us about your writer's life, how you manage to work and write at the same time. Tell us about the person you are, and how it all fits together."

I'd never really written much more than fiction, emails, and tech reports at work. And I wasn't sure how to begin. So, as I normally do, I just started writing.

I think back to that day as the unleashing of a whole different type of writing. This was personal, easy-to-read, and fun writing. Sort of like emailing one of my fans, or speaking one-on-one to a newbie writer who approached me for advice at a book signing.

At the time, I didn't think of it as blogging, per se. I didn't really know what a blog was back then. So I called the torrent of mini-essays that ensued "Seedlings" columns. I thought of them as "little seeds of ideas that sprouted in my brain while driving to work or before falling asleep. Not enough to flesh out into novels, by any means, but insistent enough to require capturing, all the same."

A Blog by Any Other Name...

Since 2005, I've written over a hundred and fifty articles. These pieces range from 500 to 1500 words, and cover topics like writing tips and advice, a writer's life, book reviews, promotional tips, slices of life, etc. I keep a spreadsheet that lets me track where and when I've posted or guest-posted, and the list, in itself, has grown dramatically.

Writers need to establish personal blogs to help promote their work, network with readers and writers, and to provide a home for their articles. But that's not really enough, these days. It's also good to get on a regularly published list of literary journals, group blogs, social media sites, etc. if you can. For example, my short pieces go up monthly at sites like the Future Mystery Anthology Magazine, and The Voice in the Dark Literary Journal.

I also post weekly at a collaborative blog with three other mystery writers, entitled Murderby4. Every Sunday, I write a piece for Murderby4, then post it on my personal blog, and copy it over to my favorite social media sites, right here at Gather.com. Often I'll have the energy to do the same at some of the .ning groups, like The Book Marketing Network, or Book Blogs. There are other sites I used to frequent such as EzineArticles.com, Helium.com, etc. Lately I've had a hard time keeping up with all their requirements about so many allowed links per article, etc., so I've sort of slowed down there. But they're all good, and I'm sure you can find your own assortment of places to post your blog pieces in addition to your personal writer's blog. The message here is to take advantage of the time you spend on these articles, and post them all over the place to get more coverage.

From each of the postings, I then tweet the article by simply clicking on the small Twitter icon at the end of each piece. I add key words to the canned pretweet, and often add "Plz RT", which signals my pals on Twitter to retweet the link to their followers. In order not to overwhelm my friends on facebook, I generally post a link to that site just once, linking to Gather, where many folks add their comments and their own observations about the topic of the day.

I also keep a list of subjects I want to write about so I don't run out of ideas. Don't get me wrong - sometimes I come up empty-handed. It's hard to have a column ready every week, never mind while keeping up with the current WIP. I don't know how those newspaper columnists do it!

Why Blog? (I Just Wanna Write!)


Why do we do this? What's the benefit? And how can we justify taking time away from our "real" writing to do these short little blogs?

First of all, it's about connecting with people; connecting on a deep down, personal level. If you can relate to your readers, they might wander over to see what else you've written. Perhaps they'll check out your books. And maybe even buy some! More often than not, however, you'll find the benefit of blogging is a gateway to meeting wonderful people who often are in your boat. These writers may have their own blogs, may be looking for guest posts, just like you. Little by little, by sharing, networking, and helping each other, you can all gain more exposure to readers and blog followers by holding hands and posting each other's pieces. There's a lot of synergy in that model. And eventually, assuming your books are good, you'll start to grow a nice audience for your work.


Giving Back

Of course, you also want to offer something of value to your followers. In addition to hopefully entertaining them, giving them a bit of a laugh from time to time, and offering the benefit of your own observations and experience, you want to help them on their own journey. Be open to newbie writers who have never written a blog in their life. Offer to showcase their new book. Ask folks whose books you've read to guest blog for you. You'll be surprised at how many of the best selling authors actually respond and appreciate the option of reposting their blogs on your site. Always be willing to pay it forward, and offer freebies off and on like contests where folks can win a copy of your eBook(s) or print books. You can host other author's giveaways--that's always a treat for readers--but be sure you don't make the conditions for winning too hard. That never works. Usually I just ask someone to comment on the article to be eligible to win. Simple and effective!

The Rules of the Game

My version of blogging doesn't necessarily meet all the "rule of thumb" advice that I'd stumbled on over the past seven years. I've sometimes read that blogs should be "short and sweet", that you should blog every day, and that if you write something longer than 500 words, people lose interest. I'm not so sure about all that.

So, I don't follow those rules, and in the course of letting myself navigate through this mire with my own instincts, I've managed to create a pretty decent platform. The last time I googled my name, I got over 4,000 hits, mostly from the articles I've written. I've tried to help writers by sharing advice and tips, and have connected on a deep level with so many wonderful folks, not limited to writers or readers. It's been a good run, and I'm grateful for all the folks I've met through this process.

How to Get Started

Don't let all this scare you if you haven't ever blogged or are just about to release your first novel. It's a growing and learning process that comes with time.

Start with your own blog. Gather up your book cover images, a headshot if you like, and links you might like to add to the side bar. If you already have books to sell, sign up for Amazon Associates and get your product links. You can also create mini-slideshows where you feature your own book covers, and it's really easy to copy the code onto your own blog sidebar.

Blogs are fairly easy and intuitive to create, using a platform like Blogger or WordPress. Usually it's all free, too.

Once you have your template in place with photos and links, etc., then it's time to write something! There's no wrong topic with which to begin. Talk about yourself a little, if you wish. Pick a subject you're wondering about in the literary world. Or offer a chapter from your book(s). (tip - make sure you have your publisher's approval before you publish more than a blurb from your own work - check your book contract.)

How to Get Followers

Some blogs go a long time without any official followers. And that's okay. You can check your stats to see how many hits you've had. Just keep writing, check out other blogs, and comment/follow them if they suit your interests. Then you can invite folks back to read your blog, and the whole process begins!

Final Caution

It's really easy to get so caught up in the promotion of your work that your free writing time for your WIP almost disappears. Try to get on a schedule. You need to balance this aspect of your marketing plan with the time to actually create more products to market! It's a real challenge.

Bobby Brown Leaves Whitney Houston's Funeral Over Seating

Bobby Brown did not attend the funeral services of his ex-wife, singer Whitney Houston, in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday (February 18). Brown arrived and left after a disagreement with security over his seating inside the New Hope Baptist Church, a source confirmed to MTV News.

In a statement released to the press by his rep, Brown explained, "My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move.

"Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina," the singer continued. "In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how."

Whitney Houston's funeral, or Home-Going, was held on Saturday at noon, and the Reverend Al Sharpton, who was also in attendance, weighed in on Brown's arrival and departure in a series of tweets.

"I am at Whitney's funeral. I spoke with Bobby Brown trying to calm him down and not distract from the services. Today is about Whitney!" Sharpton wrote a little after 1:15 p.m.

In a subsequent tweet, the MSNBC personality pleaded on behalf of Brown's case. "We are out of the service. I don't want anyone distorting Bobby Brown. He has shown love and respect today. Stop hatin' "

The traditional Baptist ceremony was a celebration of Houston's life, rooted in the church and her New Jersey upbringing.

An array of family friends, including Dionne Warwick, BeBe & CeCe Winans along with luminaries like Clive Davis, Stevie Wonder and Kevin Costner, who starred with Houston in the 1992 hit film "The Bodyguard," spoke and performed. Among the others in attendance were actor/producer Tyler Perry and Mariah Carey, who shared the 1998 duet "When You Believe" with Whitney.

Nick Cannon Quits Radio Show Amid Health Concerns

'Even Superman has to sleep,' Cannon says about cutting back his work schedule.

Amid new health concerns, Nick Cannon has announced that he will step down as host of his morning show on 92.3 Now. The DJ/rapper made the announcement early Friday morning (February 17).

"Under doctor's orders, I have been asked to put my health first and cut back on some of my professional commitments in order to allow my body to get the rest that it needs to keep up with the demands of my multi-tasking schedule," he said in a statement.

"It has been an absolute pleasure working with CBS Radio and the 92.3 NOW morning show team and I would like to thank them for their unwavering support," he said, adding that while he will no longer host his daily show, he will still host his weekly countdown show. "I will continue to host my syndicated 'Cannon's Countdown' weekend show and look forward to contributing to 92.3 NOW whenever possible. Even Superman has to sleep."

The station has announced that for the time being, DJ Lil Cee will replace Cannon. "We respect and understand Nick's decision to step down from his day-to-day position as host of Morning Drive on 92.3 NOW, and fully support him as he takes on a less demanding role with the station in order to address his health," they said. "Everyone at the station and all of the CBS RADIO family wish him well, and look forward to his continuing contributions to 92.3 NOW."

The news comes after Cannon revealed he had been hospitalized last week for a slew of new health issues. "It's my first day back since Friday, and not many people have known this but, uh ... I've been in the hospital since Friday," he said on his radio show on Wednesday. "I was having a lot of pain in my back ... I learned that I had blood clots in my lungs ... an enlarged ventricle in the right side of my heart."

On Friday morning, he took to Twitter as he prepped to say goodbye to his morning show. "A bitter sweet morning. I have to stop my radio show. Doctors orders," he tweeted. "The Doctors found blood clots in my lungs and said if I don't slow down and stop working so hard then it's a wrap!"

Cannon had been hospitalized over the holidays for kidney failure but seemed to be doing better. In an interview with MTV News weeks after the incident, he shared what was believed to have contributed to the hospitalization.

"I always considered myself as someone who was in great shape, but I was doing too much [to my body] so my immune system got confused and just started attacking my kidneys," Cannon said in mid-January, pledging to focus on a healthier lifestyle. "You look at my Twitter picture and I look like I'm in shape, but I was putting the wrong stuff into my body, speeding all the time, not sleeping and eating properly. It's all about taking time and really caring about yourself and how you fuel yourself."

Factory output jumps 0.7 percent in January (AP)

WASHINGTON ? U.S. factories boosted output last month and December ended up being their best month of growth in five years.

Strong auto sales and growing business investment in machinery and other equipment are keeping factories busy and helping the economy grow.

The Federal Reserve said Wednesday that manufacturing production increased 0.7 percent in January. And output soared 1.5 percent in December, according to an upward revision. That's the biggest one-month gain since December 2006.

Overall industrial production, which includes output by mines and utilities as well as factories, was unchanged in January. Still, the flat reading was mostly because Americans used less energy to heat their homes during an unseasonably warm winter.

Jonathan Basile, an economist at Credit Suisse, said December and January marked the best two months of growth for manufacturing since the summer of 2009, when the recession ended.

Basile also pointed to a regional survey conducted in February by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York released Wednesday, which showed factory activity in that region grew for the third straight month. That suggests the strong momentum in January carried over into February. And even though a measure of hiring in the New York survey dipped, it still indicated more hiring ahead.

"It looks like we're set up for a little faster growth in the coming months," Basile said.

Factory output has risen 16.7 percent from its low point during the recession, in June 2009, according to the Fed's industrial production report. It is still 7.1 percent below its December 2007 peak.

In January, auto production climbed 6.8 percent ? the biggest gain since July 2010. That coincides with best growth in car sales in more than two years.

Industrial machinery production increased 2.2 percent, after an even larger gain in December. Computer and electronics production moved up 1.4 percent.

Two strong months of manufacturing growth are among other encouraging signs that show the economy could grow at a steady pace this year. Five straight months of solid job growth has lowered the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest level in nearly three years.

Several factors could weigh on growth this year. Gas prices are rising again. Europe's financial turmoil could weaken demand for U.S. exports. And another year of weak pay increases could force consumers to cut back on spending.

Still, the economy is growing and manufacturing is accelerating. That has helped drive the slow but steady recovery.

The economy grew at an annual pace of 2.8 percent in the final three months of last year, a full percentage point higher than the previous quarter.

Factory activity expanded at the fastest pace in seven months in January, according to a private survey by the Institute for Supply Management. New orders and order backlogs rose at the fastest pace in nine months.

Manufacturing companies have strongly boosted their efficiency in recent years, automating many plants and processes. That's allowed them to produce more with fewer workers.

Still, many are hiring. The government said factories added a net 50,000 workers in January, the most in a year. Manufacturers added a net 235,000 jobs in 2011, the biggest annual rise since 1997.

Another positive sign: the average work week for manufacturing employees increased last month.

"The manufacturing sector is on a tear," Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients.

GRAHAM, Wash. ? A search at a recycling center recovered some papers, books and a map of Utah that Josh Powell dropped off the day before he killed his two young sons and himself in an explosive fire, the Pierce County sheriff's office said.

Volunteers who combed through more than 10 tons of paper over the weekend found what the sheriff's office called a "testament" with Powell's name on it, some paperback books with his wife's name on them and the Utah map. The office did not elaborate on what the testament contains.

"We'll take what we have and analyze it and determine if it has evidentiary value or if it leads us to another location," Sgt. Ed Troyer told KIRO-FM ( http://is.gd/nH4iw9) on Monday.

Investigators also are testing a bloodstained comforter that was found last week in a storage unit Powell had rented.

Authorities are still looking for the body of Susan Powell, who disappeared in December 2009 in Utah. Josh Powell was a person of interest and prosecutors said killing his children and himself was an admission of guilt in her death.

Powell slammed his door in the face of a social worker Feb. 5, seized his sons, Charlie and Braden, hit them with a hatchet and set fire to his gasoline-soaked home in Graham in a blast that rocked the neighborhood.

More than a thousand people mourned the deaths of Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, at a public funeral Saturday in Tacoma.

Josh Powell had said that on the night Susan Powell vanished, he took the boys from their home in West Valley City, Utah, on a late-night camping trip. Authorities who have searched the central Utah desert for Susan Powell's body have found nothing.

After his wife's disappearance, Powell moved back to Washington into his father's home with the boys.

Last September, authorities got a warrant to search Steve Powell's home. Authorities found explicit images on his computers during the search, and Steve Powell was jailed on voyeurism and child porn charges.

Josh Powell lost custody of the boys, who were sent to live with Susan Powell's parents. They were on a supervised custody visit when they were killed.

Judge tosses case seeking rights for orcas

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? An effort to free whales from SeaWorld by claiming they were enslaved made a splash in the news but flopped in court Wednesday.

A federal judge in San Diego dismissed an unprecedented lawsuit seeking to grant constitutional protection against slavery to a group of orcas that perform at SeaWorld parks, saying the 13th amendment applies only to humans.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller stopped the case from proceeding two days after he became the first judge in U.S. history to listen to arguments in court over the possibility of granting constitutional rights for members of an animal species.

"As 'slavery' and 'involuntary servitude' are uniquely human activities, as those terms have been historically and contemporaneously applied, there is simply no basis to construe the Thirteenth Amendment as applying to non-humans," Miller wrote in his ruling.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed the lawsuit in October and named five whales as plaintiffs. PETA says the wild-captured orcas are enslaved by SeaWorld because they are held in concrete tanks against their will and forced to perform in shows at its parks in San Diego and Orlando, Fla.

SeaWorld called the lawsuit baseless and a waste of the court's time and money.

"We cannot hope that this is PETA's last publicity stunt but we can now refocus our energy in more positive and constructive ways: delivering high quality education experiences to our guests and providing the highest possible standard of care to our animals," spokesman Dave Koontz wrote in a statement.

Legal experts say it opened an interesting debate about the expansion of animal rights.

PETA attorney Jeffrey Kerr says his organization does not plan to give up the fight to protect the orcas, but he did not specify the next action.

PETA is known for its provocative anti-fur and pro-vegan campaigns to engage the court of public opinion.

"Today's decision does not change the fact that the orcas who once lived naturally wild and free, are today kept as slaves by SeaWorld," Kerr said in a statement. "PETA will regroup and determine how to continue to work for the legal protection they deserve."

SeaWorld denies any mistreatment of the animals and says its parks have raised awareness that has helped conservation efforts. It also says it has rescued orcas injured in the wild.

perspective. We invite papers from scholars working in Ireland on all

The Oct. 28 game at Wembley will feature the Rams and the New England Patriots, who lost Sunday's Super Bowl to the New York Giants.
