DeMerit: Timbers' win what 'we've been waiting for'

The long, tough summer around BC Place has claimed several victims in terms of performance among the Whitecaps. Suffice to say, it generally hasn?t been good enough as Martin Rennie?s club squandered one opportunity after another to put some distance on the pursuers from FC Dallas, the only club still battling Vancouver for that final playoff spot.

One man has remained steadfast, captain Jay DeMerit. His performances in every game I?ve seen have ranged from pretty good to downright heroic.

Here?s what the former U.S. international had to say about last night?s 4-0 win over Chivas USA:

It?s been the performance we?ve been waiting for for a long time. It takes a certain effort from a lot of guys to do performances like tonight. For once we put a performance together ? the defenders defended well, and the goalscorers went and scored goals.

At the end of the day, it comes down to pretty simple things and pretty simple jobs. It?s just a matter of guys taking responsibility to do them.?

Make a Handy Little Android PC for Light Lifting

As many of us are gearing up for Windows 8's imminent release, it may well be worth considering some alternatives. I don't know about you, but after XP to Windows 7, via Vista, the idea of another OS from Microsoft, while not yet causing night sweats, is engendering some trepidation.

Rare US meningitis outbreak grows; 4 dead, 22 sick

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? An outbreak of a rare form of meningitis is likely to grow after sickening 26 people in five states, including four who died, health officials warned.

All received steroid injections, mostly for back pain, a fairly typical treatment. The drug was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts that issued a recall last week and has shut down operations.

The type of meningitis involved is not contagious like the more common forms. This type is caused by a fungus often found in leaf mold and which health officials suspect may have been in the steroid.

Eighteen of the cases are in Tennessee, where a Nashville clinic received the largest shipment of the steroid.. Investigators, though, say they are still trying to confirm the source of the infection.

Three cases have been reported in Virginia, two in Maryland, two in Florida and one in North Carolina. Two of the deaths were in Tennessee, and Virginia and Maryland had one each, said officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More new cases are almost certain to appear in the coming days, said Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner. Five new cases were confirmed over the past 24 hours, he said Wednesday, calling the situation a "rapidly evolving outbreak."

But federal health officials weren't clear about whether new infections are occurring. They are looking for ? and increasingly finding ? illnesses that occurred in the past two or three months.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include severe and worsening headache, nausea, dizziness and fever. Some of the patients also experienced slurred speech, and difficulty walking and urinating, Tennessee health officials said.

"Some are doing well and improving. Some are very ill ? very, very seriously ill and may die," Tennessee health official Dr. David Reagan said of the state's patients.

The incubation period is estimated at anywhere from two to 28 days, so some people may not have fallen ill yet, Tennessee health officials said. At three clinics in Tennessee, officials are contacting the more than 900 people who received the steroid in the past three months.

Investigators also have been looking into the antiseptic and anesthetic used during the injections. Neither has been ruled out. However, the primary suspicion is on the steroid medication. Steroid shots are common for back pain, often given together with an anesthetic.

The Food and Drug Administration identified the maker of the steroid as New England Compounding Center, a specialty pharmacy in Framingham, Mass. Last week, the company issued a recall of three lots of the steroid ? methylprednisolone acetate. In a statement, the company said it had voluntarily suspended operations and was working with regulators to identify the source of the infection.

Compounding pharmacies mix ingredients for customized medicines that generally aren't commercially available. They are regulated by states.

The outbreak was discovered about two weeks ago when Vanderbilt University's Dr. April Pettit was treating a patient who was not doing well for reasons doctors did not understand.

When the lab found the fungus in the patient's spinal fluid, Pettit began asking questions and learned the patient recently had steroid injections in his spine, according to Dr. William Schaffner, who chairs Vanderbilt's Department of Preventive Medicine.

"When it became clear that the infection-control practices at the clinic were up to par, the steroid medication became implicated," Schaffner said.

Federal officials did not release condition reports or details on all the patients in the five states. Fungal meningitis is treated with high-dose antifungal medications, usually given intravenously in a hospital.

Seventeen of the Tennessee cases were treated at the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville. It had 2,000 vials of the suspect lots, the largest number. That clinic voluntarily closed last month to deal with the investigation.

EU states lagging in aid transparency: watchdog

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union member states France, Germany and Italy should be more open about their financing of aid and development projects, a survey of international aid donors, published on Monday, said.

London-based watchdog "Publish What You Fund" ranked the European Commission's development branch fifth out of 72 organizations in its 2012 report on financial transparency in aid.

German state development agency GIZ (Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit), ranked 39th, and 44th-ranked French development agency AFD (Agence Francaise de Developpement) were criticized for not publishing detailed financial data.

France dropped 15 places in the annual report, which said the country's public bodies don't make enough effort to be open to outside scrutiny.

The report noted that unlike many EU members, France and Germany have not signed the Open Government Partnership, a pledge by more than 50 governments to increase transparency.

The survey graded agencies on access to their information, including how often they publish their aid allocation, strategy, and budget.

Agencies that have established online databases and worked closely with the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI), which runs an online aid registry, were graded more favorably.

Other EU member countries came out well, with the top spot going to Britain's development agency DFID.

The report praised DFID for their culture of open information. The European Commission, the EU's executive, was also singled out for leading on aid transparency internationally and internally.

"EU aid is regularly under scrutiny of many organizations: we are sometimes challenged - which helps us to keep improving our impact and procedures," said Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.

Eloise Todd, Brussels director of charity group ONE said the report showed that EU funding is among the world's best and should be maintained.

Aid groups worry that the European Union could make cuts to proposed development funding of 51 billion euros ($65.82 billion) in its next seven-year budget, which is slated to be adopted in a November summit of EU leaders.

"At a time when these essential funds are under threat of cuts in negotiations over the next EU budget, European governments should stand up to protect the 5 percent of the EU budget that has such a huge impact on the world's poorest," she said. ($1 = 0.7749 euros)

Space boat could voyage on Saturn moon Titan's lakes

Titan, the largest of the more than 60 natural satellites of Saturn, is covered in seas, lakes and rivers of methane, and hosts a thick atmosphere, making it one of the most Earth-like bodies in the solar system.

While rovers are ideal for exploring Mars, a boat is best for Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Scientists are proposing a new mission to explore this alluring world that would send a floating probe to land in a lake on Titan.

Titan, the largest of the more than 60 natural satellites of?Saturn, is covered in seas, lakes and rivers of methane, and hosts a thick atmosphere, making it one of the most Earth-like bodies in the solar system. Smaller than Earth but wider than Mercury,?Titan?is in many ways more like a planet than a moon.

Scientists don't know if life might be possible on Titan. Some think it's too cold, as average temperatures are a chilly minus 289 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 178 degrees Celsius). Yet others say the insulating atmosphere and plentiful liquids, not to mention a possible subsurface ocean, could be hospitable to microbial organisms.

That's part of the reason researchers are so eager to explore the world, which has been imaged in recent years by NASA's Cassini mission, and was even studied by the accompanying European Space Agency Huygens probe, which plunged through Titan's atmosphere and touched down on land in January 2005, transmitting a few hours of data before it went quiet. [Amazing Photos of Titan]

Huygens confirmed that lakes, rivers and seas of liquid hydrocarbons abound on Titan. Now scientists want to send a follow-up mission to explore them.

That's where the Titan Lake In-situ Sampling Propelled Explorer (TALISE) comes in. The proposed mission would?land a boat, propelled by wheels, paddles or screws, to float around Ligeia Mare, the largest lake on the moon, located near Titan's north pole. After splashing down, TALISE would make its way to the coast over the course of a trip lasting six months to a year.

"The main innovation in TALISE is the propulsion system," Igone Urdampilleta of Spain-based private engineering firm SENER, a member of the TALISE team, said in a statement. "This allows the probe to move, under control, from the landing site in the lake, to the closest shore. The displacement capability would achieve the obtaining of liquid and solid samples from several scientific interesting locations on Titan's surface such as the landing place, along the route towards the shore and finally at the shoreline."?

TALISE is a joint project of SENER and the Centro de Astrobiolog?a in Madrid, Spain. The concept is in its beginning stages, but scientists presented the proposal on Sept. 27 at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid.

Samsung Ventures-Backed Maluuba Launches Its ?Siri For Android? In The U.K., Australia, And Ireland

maluuba_headerLots of third-party alternatives to Apple's Siri exist, and the promise of an AI-assisted 'personal assistant' has been the talk of futurists for what seems like an eternity (the tardy time keeping is in the job description). But one such offering -- Maluuba -- caught our eye when it launched at TechCrunch Disrupt last month. And today the Android app, which was initially only available in the U.S. and Canadian Google Play Store, sees its debut in the U.K, Ireland, and Australia.
