Few tattoo artists tell their clients they could win a wet T-shirt contest. Then again, few?tattoo artists?are quite like Vincent ?Vinnie? Myers.

In his shop in a modest strip mall in Finksburg, a half-hour drive from?Baltimore, Myers specializes in tattooing nipples and areolas onto women who have undergone?breast cancer?surgery.

Using precisely mixed pigments, he creates a perfect 3-D illusion of the real thing ? and in doing so, enables women who have undergone mastectomies to feel fully like women once again.

?It?s far more rewarding than anything else I have ever done,? said Myers, 49, who has dedicated the last decade of his 28 years as atattoo artist?concentrating on post-op cosmetic tattoos.

He has treated around 3,000 breast cancer survivors so far, including many referred to him by surgeons at Baltimore?s prestigious Johns Hopkins medical center and other hospitals around the United States.

?When it?s completed and they see the final results, most women feel very emotional because they realize: ?The thing is over, I?m whole again,?? Myers said.

Myers, a Baltimore native, discovered tattooing when he was a US army medic in South Korea in the 1980s. In 2001, a friend asked him if he might tattoo some patients who had undergone?breast reconstruction.

Typical of the women who have gone under the needle at Little Vinnies Tattoos is Susan, 58, an elegant retiree with a wish ?to look as normal as possible.?

?I?m doing this for me. It makes you feel prettier,? she told AFP the other day as Myers pulled on a pair of blue latex gloves and prepared to work is magic.

?Any complications? Any allergies?? the tattooist asked before carefully mixing pigments in tiny pots and joking that Susan ?might win? a T-shirt contest once the tattoo is done.

?We?re going to go with, not peach, but more like taupe, a little bit more blue,? he said, before smearing a bit of pigment onto Susan?s fair skin to determine if he had mixed the exact color for her complexion.

?The perfect reconstructed breast doesn?t look like a breast without a nipple,? said Myers, whose fee ranges from $350 to $1,000 depending on the complexity of the task at hand.

?You get out of the shower in the morning, you look out at yourself in the mirror, and you have no nipples ? there?s a huge mental impact,? he said. ?It?s critical that the visual appearance is as close to normal as possible.?

Hospitals also offer post-mastectomy tattoos, but Myers said they are typically carried out by nurses with no more than ?a couple of days? training.

On average, it takes Myers two hours to complete his work, during which he will determine the color and size of the areolas of each patient.

?They will be some shade of color on the areola itself and a darker shade on the nipples because that is normally darker,? he said.

?Then you do a kind of grey shadow on the bottom side to highlight the top side so as to give it some depth ? using ?trompe l?oeil? to make it look like it?s three dimensional.?

When he is not in Fricksburg, Myers is often on the road, treating women in New York, Philadelphia, Charleston in South Carolina and the Saint Charles surgical hospital in New Orleans.

Myers reckoned that only a handful of his fellow tattoo artists do what he does, and in order to meet a growing demand, he has already trained two others in the secrets of his unique craft.

Some 200,000 cases of breast cancer are detected in the United States every year. Half of them require breast reconstruction, even if surgeons using the latest techniques try to retain as much of the nipple area as possible.

It helps, Myers said, that his?tattoo shop?is just that ? a tattoo shop, not a medical clinic. Patients feel more relaxed ?and you can have a little more fun here than you can at the hospital.?

In real networks ranging from Facebook friendships down to neurons in the hippocampus, small-scale groups are indeed tightly clustered, but the presence of rare but crucial connections between distant clusters means you can hop from any person to any other in surprisingly few steps. Networks with this property are called ?small worlds,? and it?s the small worlds that have high values of Q. A network with connections chosen randomly and with no interesting structure, on the other hand, will have a low Q.

Club for Growth threatens to outspend House leadership in Ariz. primary race

House Republican leaders should stay out the upcoming Arizona Republican congressional primary between Rep. Ben Quayle and Rep. David Schweikert, the Club for Growth warned Wednesday, or they will be outspent and outmatched by outside groups.

This was the message in an open letter from Club for Growth president Chris Chocola about the incumbent-on-incumbent battle caused by recent redistricting.

The warning came after the Young Guns PAC, aligned with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, endorsed freshman Rep. Adam Kinzinger over longtime Rep. Don Manzullo in a similar Illinois fight. the tea party-aligned group FreedomWorks stepped in to support Manzullo, who has the more conservative voting record by most available ratings.

Chocola?s?group remained ?neutral? in the Illinois race since neither candidate had a sufficiently conservative record to merit its support. But he wrote that the Club for Growth was ?alarmed? by the leadership?s involvement. Kitzinger, a House freshman, ultimately beat his more senior opponent.

Chocola wrote that the Club is also neutral in?the upcoming Schweikert vs. Quayle battle, but only because both have ?outstanding pro-growth voting records.?

However, ?should it become apparent that you are choosing sides on behalf of Rep. Quayle, the Club for Growth PAC will consider it necessary to intervene on behalf of Rep. Schweikert. As is our practice, if the Club?s PAC entered this primary, it is highly likely that our 75,000 members would donate considerably more funds to Rep. Schweikert?s campaign than the Republican leadership would contribute to Rep. Quayle?s campaign,? Chocola wrote.

The concern over the Arizona race stems from the fact that Speaker of the House John Boehner has donated already to Quayle, but not yet to Schweikert.

?We?d be more than a counterbalance? in Arizona, said spokesman Barney Keller. ?Aside from the party committees, last cycle, no one raised more money for the Republican candidates? than the Club for Growth.

?We?ll put our record up against anyone?s,? he said, pointing to the Club?s support of Sen. Pat Toomey and Sen. Marco Rubio over their establishment opponents, and its support of Sen. Rand Paul even when his bid seemed like a long shot.

The Club for Growth would get involved on behalf of Schweikert, Chocola wrote, only if House Leadership should choose to help Quayle.

?It is our preference to remain on the sidelines of the Arizona race, as both candidates have fine records. However, we will not sit back and allow House Republican leaders to invest resources with impunity against an incumbent fiscal conservative like Rep. David Schweikert.?

Asked whether the same would hold if the House Leadership were to side with Schweikert, an operative with ties to conservative groups ? including the Club for Growth ? simply said, ?we believe they should remain neutral.? The source repeated the same response when the Daily Caller pressed for an answer.

FreedomWorks chief operating officer Ryan Hecker questioned the premise of taking action solely in the case that house leadership does so first.

?We don?t get involved just because of what the leadership does or doesn?t do,? Hecker said. He explained that involvement with the Manzullo campaign came after a process of consideration. The timing, coinciding with Cantor?s support of Kinzinger, he said, was simply ?fortuitous.?

MAPLEWOOD, NJ ? A North Jersey man fatally stabbed his father and grandmother inside the family?s home last weekend, and then threw a house party at the residence while both bodies were still there, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Dwayne Flourney, 26, of Maplewood, faces two counts of murder, along with theft and weapons charges.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said Flourney repeatedly stabbed his 76-year-old grandmother, retired schoolteacher Sandra Flourney, on Saturday and stuffed her body into the trunk of a car at the home.

When Brian Flourney, 52, returned home later in the day, Murray said, his son fatally stabbed him and put the body in a chair on a sun porch in the back of the house and covered it with a sheet. Brian Flourney was an investigator for the Union County Public Defender?s Office.

At a news conference Wednesday, Murray would not comment on a possible motive for the slayings. She said a knife was found at the home, but would not provide details.

Hours after the killings occurred, Dwayne Flourney invited several friends over to the house for drinks, authorities said. Murray said it did not appear any of the partygoers knew of the deaths or that the bodies were in and near the house.

Dwayne Flourney then left the home Sunday, driving off in his father?s car, the prosecutor said. Murray said he was arrested Tuesday night at the home of a female friend in Phillipsburg.

The arrest came a few hours after the bodies were found at the home. Police had gone there after Brian Flourney failed to show up for work.

Flourney was being held Wednesday night at the Essex County Jail. His bail was set at $1 million, and an arraignment was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.

Days after Afghanistan massacre, suspect nameless

OLYMPIA, Washington (AP) ? The U.S. soldier suspected in the massacre of more than a dozen Afghan civilians is a 38-year-old father of two who served three tours in Iraq and is based in Washington state. Still, days after the killings, the military has kept quiet one of the most important details ? his name.

Military officials said it was military policy not to release the name until charges are filed. But military experts said this case seems unusual.

"This is unprecedented in my experience," said Eugene Fidell, who teaches military law at Yale University. "It's very strange."

Fidell speculated that the military was focused on ensuring the safety of the soldier's family.

Information has been limited inside the military as well. Jill Barber, a wife of a staff sergeant in the same battalion as the suspect, said she learned of the Sunday shooting only from news coverage. She said her husband wasn't allowed to call her for more than a day after the shooting and that soldiers can get in trouble for talking about it.

"They shut everything down over there," Barber said Monday. "I didn't even find out about it from him. They're not allowed to say anything."

It's typical for the military to put stringent controls on communication after deaths or injuries, including the shutdown of Internet and telephone access on a combat zone base, often for 24 hours. If a soldier is wounded but his injuries are not life-threatening, military officials will allow him or her to call next of kin on a satellite phone, but they are instructed not to mention others having been hurt or killed ? and an officer stands at the bedside to make sure that rule is followed.

Jeffrey Addicott, who previously served as the senior legal adviser to the U.S. Army's Special Forces, said the military has increasingly used the shutdown of communications to control information. He said soldiers who are aware of the identity of the suspect likely have orders from superiors not to speak about it and have probably had their electronic devices confiscated so nothing leaks out.

Addicott said he can't think of any other case where a name has been held back for this long, but he thinks it may be necessary in this case to help contain any backlash. He fears that extremists may try to seek revenge for the killings, perhaps by targeting the soldier's family.

"I think it's probably a good thing that we don't have to release his name," Addicott said.

Military officials in this case haven't even officially confirmed that the soldier was based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. That information came from sources who spoke to The Associated Press and other media organizations and spoke only on condition of anonymity. Base spokesman Joe Piek referred any questions to military leaders in Afghanistan.

The suspect was flown out of Afghanistan on Wednesday evening to what officials describe as a pretrial confinement facility.

The soldier is with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. He was attached to Camp Belambai, home to a village stability force that pairs special operations troops with villagers to help provide neighborhood security.

Authorities said the suspect attacked two small villages close to his base in southern Kandahar province. An Afghan official said he was shown a surveillance video of the soldier returning to his base, laying down his weapon and raising his arms in surrender.

There have been other circumstances where military officials have taken their time in releasing information about soldier suspects, such as in the deliberate thrill killings of three Afghan civilians during patrols by another Lewis-McChord based unit in 2010.

Just after the last of those killings, in May of that year, a whistleblower told Army investigators about the unjustified killings. The officers quickly identified which killings the whistleblower was talking about, and within days they had arrested a dozen soldiers ? five for potential involvement in the deaths, and the rest for a series of other misdeeds, including taking body parts from the dead and drug use.

Vague word of the arrests leaked out about two weeks later. The Army released the name of one of the central figures in the case, Jeremy Morlock, in early June after he had been charged with murder. It did not release the other names and charges until mid-June.

While that case was largely unknown until the military released information, this week's case was immediately known across the globe.

In wake of scandals, list highlights ethical firms

(Reuters) - After a wave of scandals including wrongful foreclosures on U.S. home mortgages, worker suicides at a major Apple Inc supplier in China and the $1.7 billion accounting fraud at Japan's Olympus Corp, a New York think tank is calling out companies that take the high road.

The Ethisphere Institute's annual World's Most Ethical companies list, released on Thursday, found that 145 companies in countries including United States, Great Britain, Japan, Portugal and India stood out as setting a high standard for their employees' behavior.

American Express Co, General Electric Co and Starbucks Corp -- all of which have made the list six years running -- are among the companies that stand out as encouraging employees to voice their concerns, said Alex Brigham, executive director of Ethisphere.

"Do you not only know what you're supposed to do, but if you have a concern around an ethical issue, will you be willing to be report it?" Brigham said. "It's the latter point which is so important."

Companies where employees are willing to report problems are also likely to be places where people are quicker to offer solutions, he reasoned.

Ethisphere evaluated about 5,000 global companies, including all members of the Standard & Poor's 500 index, on reputation, corporate citizenship, culture and other qualities.

Newcomers to the list range from those that focus on social responsibility, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Britain's Ethical Fruit Co, to Portuguese utility EDP Energias de Portugal and U.S. defense consulting company SRA International Inc.

'AX MURDERERS' VS. 'UNFORGIVING' STANDARDS

Wall Street investment firms remained "glaringly absent" from the list, Brigham said.

"We're six years without them despite a lot of applications," said Brigham, whose resume includes time as a principal of private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and as an analyst at investment bank Lazard Freres. "We see them focusing on some of the rote regulatory requirements and the trading rules, but then we see a culture that's designed to find loopholes in the rules to find profit."

Evidence of that attitude came in a Wednesday op-ed column in the New York Times by a Goldman Sachs Group Inc executive who resigned over concerns that the company had become more interested in making a quick profit at its customers' expense than helping them to make money. The investment bank said in a statement that the column did not reflect the way it does business.

"Leadership used to be about ideas, setting an example and doing the right thing," the executive, Greg Smith, wrote in reference to Goldman Sachs' culture. "Today, if you make enough money for the firm (and are not currently an ax murderer) you will be promoted into a position of influence."

Firm enforcement of ethics policies is the only way to convince employees that a company takes such matters seriously, said the head of Realogy, a newcomer to the list.

"You can be a top performer, but if you violate the rules, the punishment will be unforgiving," said Robert Smith, chief executive officer of Realogy, whose businesses include the Century 21 and Sotheby's International real estate brokerages.

That applies to flagrant violations and to smaller ones, and managers at Realogy must ensure that all their employees receive ethics training each year to be eligible for their bonuses.

INDIA LEADS; CHINA, RUSSIA LAG

Also on this year's list are two Indian companies, Tata Steel Ltd and software services exporter Wipro Ltd. No Chinese or Russian companies have yet made the ranking, Brigham said.

While Olympus was never a contender to make the list, Apple was "not so far off," Brigham said. Following highly publicized worker suicides in 2010 and a blast that killed three people at Chinese supplier Foxconn Technology Co Ltd last year, the maker of the iPhone and iPad has hired teams to audit working conditions at its major suppliers.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is taking "a totally different approach towards ethical supply chain," Brigham said. "They're one of the few players that have been very proactive about supplier audits, perhaps no surprise on the heels of the problems they have had."

Having a reputation for operating in an ethical manner helps a company survive over time, said Jeremy Wilson, senior manager of ethics and corporate policy at network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc, which has made the list for five of the past six years.

"Anyone can make money in the short term," Wilson said. "You'll see companies pop up overnight, and they'll make money for a couple of quarters and do business unethically. The businesses that stick around for tens or hundreds of years are transparent."
